Surfers Storm Rockaway
Killer waves kicked up by Hurricane Bill proved to be killer fun for city surfers yesterday.
Though the storm was downgraded to a Category One as it churned up the Atlantic, surfers still had to brave 10-foot swells to hang 10 on Rockaway Beach.
The waters were deemed so dangerous that the city Parks Department, fearing rip currents already blamed for killing seven people this year, ordered every beach in Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn closed.
Only two sections were left open — unguarded parts of the Queens waterfront meant to be used only by experienced surfers.
