Nationally known Milwaukee poet John Koethe is among a stellar list of people invited to write a poem for the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s discovery of the port of New York.

Chris Ward, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is commissioning seven or so poets to write about some aspect of the harbor. The poets are to present their work Sept. 17 at a gala anniversary celebration in New York. Plans are under way to publish the poems in a pamphlet as well as in a limited-edition fine art printing.

Koethe, a philosophy professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, hasn’t indicated which aspect of the harbor he will write about. But he e-mailed saying, “It sounds fascinating and like a lot of fun, and I’ll be in distinguished company.”

That company includes John Ashbery, Jorie Graham, Eavan Boland, Paul Muldoon, Toon Tellegen and Yusef Komunyakaa.
