MAS Unveils Public Ideas For Coney Island

The Municipal Art Society (MAS) will present ideas the public has offered for Coney Island at a public meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 14.

At the same meeting, the MAS will present economic analysis and design work for the amusement district.

Hundreds of “extraordinary and unique ideas” from around the world continue to come in as part of a global call for ideas (see www.imagineconey.com), part of a larger effort to re-imagine Coney that included a charrette (an intense design workshop) featuring a team of world-class architects, amusement designers and economists.

In mid-November, the charette team released a new concept for Coney Island that featured near-term and long-term programming elements with Coney Island to become a main stage for the city.

Some of the public ideas are a Sushi Skate Park, numerous music festivals, the restoration of antique amusement rides from around the world, rebuilding the Elephant Hotel, and creating a Venice, Calif.-style Muscle Beach. The call for ideas remains open through Jan. 15.

The presentation, set to begin at 6:30 p.m., will take place at Our Lady of Solace Church, 1717 Mermaid Ave.
