The world-renowned British Royal Air Force (RAF) Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, is set to perform their first-ever aerial display in New York City on June 25. Supported by ICAP, the world’s premier interdealer broker, the New York City appearance is part of a larger North American goodwill tour for the Red Arrows.
The Red Arrows’ nine-pilot team, flying BAE Systems Hawk planes, will perform an impressive array of aerial maneuvers over New York Harbor beginning at 6:30pm and ending at 6:55 pm. The event will be best visible from the shores of South Beach, Staten Island, and the public is welcome to attend free of charge.
At 6:58 pm, following the display over Staten Island, the Red Arrows will perform a special flyby of the Statue of Liberty.
Please note: the Red Arrows Statue of Liberty flyby at 6:58 pm will be at a northeast direction, coming up New York harbor, past Brooklyn/Staten Island, the Statue of Liberty, and further up the Hudson River. The Red Arrows will then turn around and retrace their steps, flying back to the Atlantic Ocean the same way they came in.
“New York City is proud to host the Red Arrows during their first visit to the Big Apple,” said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. “I applaud the contributions and generosity of ICAP and the Red Arrows and look forward to a spectacular showcase soaring above the greatest skyline in the world.”
“Staten Island is honored to host the Red Arrows for their first air show in New York City,” said Staten Island Borough President James P. Molinaro. “This thrilling aerobatic display will be performed in the skies above the South Beach Boardwalk, but anywhere from Fort Wadsworth to Miller Field will offer prime viewing locations. On behalf of the people of Staten Island, I’d like to thank ICAP for making this historic event possible and giving New Yorkers the opportunity to marvel at the mighty Royal Air Force of Great Britain, America’s closest ally.”
The Red Arrows will make their arrival in the New York City area with a landing at Republic Airport (FRG) in Farmingdale, Long Island, at 1:22pm on June 25, where they will be welcomed at a ceremony hosted by U.S. and British war veterans.
“This appearance helps further the RAF and ICAP’s shared goal of fostering continued goodwill between the U.S. and United Kingdom,” said Wing Commander Jas Hawker. “We’ve always wanted to perform in New York City, and we’re very happy to see this historic event happen.”
“ICAP is pleased to support The Red Arrows in their first-ever New York City appearance,” said Douglas Rhoten, Chief Executive Officer, ICAP Americas. “By having the Red Arrows display here in New York City, we hope to connect two of the world’s most vital financial centers—London and New York.”
This year marks the 44th display season in which the Red Arrows have demonstrated the professional excellence of the Royal Air Force to millions of people both in the UK and worldwide. In 2008, the Red Arrows are scheduled to perform over 75 displays in the UK, Europe, Canada and the USA between May and October. Commanded by Wing Commander Jas Hawker, the Red Arrows consists of over 100 officers and airmen drawn from throughout the Royal Air Force. Officially formed on March 1, 1965, the Red Arrows have performed over 4,000 displays in 53 different countries.
