Group says water is cleaner in NY’s Hudson River

July 24, 2008

Is it safe to swim in the Hudson River and other waters around New York City? The environmental group Riverkeeper is releasing a report Thursday on water quality based on samples taken over the past two years.

The group, which conducted the survey with scientists at Columbia University, says conditions vary depending on the weather and where the sample is taken.

The report says that even though large amounts of sewage enter the river during storms, water quality has sharply improved over the past several decades.

Riverkeeper credits passage of the Clean Water Act for the improvement.
