Waterway Closed After Orange Juice Ship Collides With Another Vessel

January 25, 2008

A freight ship carrying a cargo of orange juice collided with another vessel in the Newark Bay, causing the coast guard to close the small waterway. The 669-foot ship, called the Orange Sun, collided with a dredging vessel at about 2 p.m., causing a small amount of hydraulic fluid to leak into the bay, a spokesman for the Coast Guard, Seth Johnson, told the Associated Press.

None of the 20 people on the Orange Sun or the seven people on the dredging vessel were injured, nor were the boats in danger of sinking, Mr. Johnson said.

The Orange Sun was being escorted into the Port of Newark by four tugboats when the collision occurred, Mr. Johnson said. Investigators had not determined the cause of the accident, he said.
