Revival at the river
The campaign To clean up the Bronx river celebrated two landmarks, with the Bronx zoo reintroducing herring to the river 400 years after Dutch dams drove them out, and attorney General eliot spitzer inking a deal with several Westchester towns to stop them from dumping sewage into the waterway.
Barretto point park opened on the hunts point waterfront on the site of a former toxic dump. The city spent $7.2 million capping the site with topsoil and turf, planting trees, and installing ball courts, playground equipment, an amphitheater and even a small beach. a long campaign by local community groups to reclaim the 5-acre site turned their vision into a lush park with a skyline view of Manhattan.
