BASS AND BLUES FILL SHORE AREAS

THE beach action from Montauk Point to Breezy Point has been a surfcasters dream with bass and blues blitzing the shore areas. Montauk had an incredible week with bass and blues taken on bucktails along the Southside as well at Jones and North Bars. Farther west toward the village of Montauk there was action at Ditch Planes and also along the Napeague Stretch.

Hats off to the Great South Bay Anglers who took the Korkers Cup, an annual surf contest amongst fishing clubs out at Montauk last week.

There was also bass action around Shinnecock Inlet and up close along the shore of Tiana Bay. Pencil poppers turned the trick for anglers near Smith Point taking bass to 30 pounds.

For the sharpies from Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens there was action at the Verrazano Bridge and over to Breezy Point. I hear the guys at the 69th St pier in Brooklyn picked up some stripers on clams.

I get word from the Cross Bay Bait and Tackle that bottom action is a good bet. In Jamaica Bay there is nice mix of porgies, sea bass and blackfish by Floyd Bennett Field.

The fall run of blackfish is on in the Sound. From Jacks Bait and Tackle on City Island we hear the togs to 7 pounds are coming from the waters off Pea and Huckleberry Islands.

The IGFA has added two new special features to its web site.

One is called Kids Catches, a photo page just for young anglers who want to share their fishing pictures and stories with Junior Anglers around the world.

The photos don’t have to be of a world-record fish, just clear and sharp with a short piece of information on the youngster and his or her catch. The IGFA will pick some favorite pictures for the web page and some of them will also be included in upcoming issues of the International Junior Angler.

The IGFA has also introduced a new fish forum to its web site that offers technology that’s user friendly with contributors sharing pictures, questions and comments.

“It’s a great step toward creating an avid online community of fishermen related to the IGFA and fishing issues,” said Gustavo Rivera, the IGFA’s IT coordinator and webmaster. Please check it out and join into the discussions. The site can also be found at www.igfa.org.
